Flying too expensive, bus journey too long...You almost ruled out all transportation options buddy;) btw, where did you see $600 for a flight to Atlantic City. The highest i've seen was $300 for a round trip ticket.

Anyway, you can rent a car and drive it, hop on a casino bus, or take the ACES direct train to Atlantic City, though I'd avoid casino buses like the plague unless you don’t mind riding with human cargo.

I prefer the train option which you can catch directly from New York’s Penn Station to Atlantic City’s Express terminal. it only takes around 2 hours and 40 minutes and cost around $32.
