Unless you have a car and are willing to drive yourself, I would agree that anyone who is wondering how to get from Rome to Pompeii should lean towards taking a train. Especially for a day trip. Regular trains from Rome to Naples take about two or two and a half hours, while the speedier AV trains only take about 90 minutes to execute the trip. From Naples, it is just a short trip to Pompeii.
