It depends on what you're looking for. If you want fast-paced night life and lots of music / parties/ etc., Morro de Sao Paulo is hard to beat. If you prefer a laid back, tropical paradise that would make Gilligan's Island look chaotic, go to Boipeba.

There are also great beaches around Ponte de Area (Sand Point) on Ilha Itaparica, which can be reached by daily ferry or schooner service.

On the mainland, right in Salvador itself the "action" beach is at Porta da Barra. Be careful at night around there though.

By the way, remember that August is in the middle of the Brazilian winter. Temperatures tend to be moderate during the day and can be downright chilly during rainy days.
