India has over 441 animal sanctuaries, known as nature sanctuaries (IUCN category IV protected area). Of these, 28 Tiger Reserves are governed by Project Tiger, and are of particular importance to tiger conservation. Some wildlife sanctuaries are named Bird Sanctuary, for example.
