Hi!! The typical route to do in Uruguay is Colonia / Montevideo / Punta del Este... but you can start at the small town of Carmelo (boats costs about $40 from Tigre, Buenos Aires) and then take buses to Colonia / Montevideo / then from Montevideo intead of going directly to Punta del Este you can make stops in the small summer villages of Atlantida, Piriapolis... not great beaches, but in summer they have large numbers of tourists from both countries (Arg / Uru)... nothing wow, but if willing to know different places, there you have some options... for the more conservative towns I would choose any city on the Uruguay River coats (Fray Bentos, Paysandu, Salto -hotsprings in the last one-)... If I've time, I wouldn't miss Cabo Polonio & Punta del Diablo, closer to the Brazilian border... enjoy!
