Ireland has wide range of fun activities for children and the whole family. There are zoos, wildlife parks, caves, castles, boat rides, horseback riding, indoor play centers, water parks, dolphin cruises, beaches, steam train rides, puppet shows, hands-on museums, hiking, double-decker bus rides, folk parks etc., I think the Zoo in Dublin is a great place for you take your children. The nearest thing to the Black Country museum would be in Killarney - Muckross House – you can see a village set up like the "old days" with actors playing the part of the men and women living there.
I stayed in Westport town centre for two nights with my kid, who is 9 years old. I was thinking about a boat trip to Clare Island but the weather was not good. If the weather's good, Clare Island is really pictorial, and the boat trip is enjoyable. There are many boat rides, especially Killary, might be a bit long for kids this age who tire of scenery fairly quickly. There's a leisure center near Castlebar, I think it's called the Mayo Leisure Center, which has video games, bowling, laser tag and some very lame mini-golf. It's not that much interesting for adults, but the kids would probably love it. They have some fantastic workshops for kids that are free. My daughter and I did a great one on basket making and another on wool-making. Stop into Marlene's Chocolate Haven just off the bottom of James St for the best hot chocolate. And Ring for Coffee in a small courtyard off Bridge St. is a great place for a down to earth, affordable lunch that kids will eat.
Apart from this, you can find many things to do in Ireland once you reach there. Have a nice trip!
