It's good that you're not traveling alone, you seem a bit confused and worried indeed. All the information you ask is available in the net! Don't be worried, traveling is a wonderful experience, it will last throughout your life.
Andy Pettefer gave you the right replies, though, but you ought to search further if you want to really enjoy your trip (curiosity is the beginning of a successful trip!)
Get a good guide, like Lonely Planet, Michelin Green Guide (in English) ... go to a bookshop and browse guides, buy the one you prefer. THis will help you and you family arrange the trip from the beginning, as you say.
And no, three months is not enough to know in depth anywhere! I am sure the town/city where you live has many hidden faces unknown to you, so let's say three months is a good start!
