There is also Upcountry Maui (Kula, Makawao, Pukalani). It is a bit more of a drive to get to the beaches (about a half hour), but you are close to hiking, horseback riding, bike tours, wine tasting at Tedeschi Vineyards and visiting the volcano - Haleakala.

Also, it can be quite a bit less expensive if you rent a nice cottage.
