There is one way to cross the atlantic by regular ferry, although its by no means easy. You would probably be better off using a cruise ship or even contacting the container lines to see if they can offer you anything. However a regular ferry route exists. From the UK it would be Aberdeen-Shetland-Iceland-Greenland-Canada. I cant post a link but take a look at the visit shetland website there is information on there about it. Good Luck!!
