I'm Chinese living in Sydney (for the past 20 years and i'm 29 so i identify with anglo more than asian). and personally having seen the opening ceremony i have never been more proud of my heritage!

there was a nice mix of high and lo-fi mixed in cuz lets face it, if the chinese attempted a bunch of high tech fancy laser shows it'll proly blow the stadium up!

and how much less tacky was it compared to our (Sydney's) inflatable kangaroos and Nicky Webster *cringe*
