There are lots of things to do in Alaska depending on which area you are travelling to. In the interior region you have the choice of the Georgeson Botanical Garden, The University of Alaska Museum, El Dorado Goldmine, Greatland River Tours, Riverboat Discovery, Fairbanks Ice Museum and The Carlson Centre. In the South West there are more museums. The Kodiak Military History Museum, The Kodiak Baranov Museum, Alutiiq Museum and Archaelogical Repository and the Museum of the Aleutians. Also here you can take part in the Dig Afognak Archeological Expedition. South Central the list is endless. More Botanical Gardens, several museums, The Big Game Alaska Wildlife Centre, Alazka Zoo, Sealife Centre, Prince William Sound Science Centre and Kachemak Bay Wilderness Lodge. Finally in the Inside Passage region there are again several museums, the Alaska Raptor Centre, Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure, Klondike Gold Dredge Tours, Mount Roberts Tramwat and the Scenic Railroad trips. The things to do section mentioned above will give you more ideas of what you can do on your trip. If you havent already booked your flights you should check out the Flights Comparison tool which will help you compare prices from several airlines and quote you the cheapest fare available.

Kodiak Island would be a great place for you to visit since you mention you like to watch animals and birds. The land mammals native to the Kodiak Archipelago are the Kodiak brown bear, red fox, short-tailed weasel, little brown bat, tundra vole and river otter. Other species include the snowshoe hare, mountain goat, Sitka black-tailed deer, arctic ground squirrel, Roosevelt elk, muskrat, red squirrel, snowshoe hare and beaver. So there is plenty for you to photograph. There is plenty of Things to do to do on the island such as wildlife viewing, sight seeing, hunting, fishing, hiking and camping. Also there are Adult and youth sporting activities include volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, football and golf. They also have a ten lane bowling alley, a 300 seat movie theater and a teen center with two racquetball courts as well as figure toning salons and a fitness center. As far as the weather is concerned Kodiak Island enjoys generally mild coastal weather patterns. There may be occasional high winds and a little rain but it is only a slight drizzle once in a while. During the summer months the long days and comfortable temperatures help to make your vacation on the Emerald Isle as enjoyable as it is beautiful. To get to Kodiak you can take a ferry from several ports usually in Anchorage but that will depend where you are staying in Alaska. However wherever you are it shouldnt be difficult to find a ferry going to Kodiak

Hunting is allowed on Kodiak, but like any other state, if you do not live there, you need to get an out of state license which can be expensive. You probably also need a guide. South east Alaska has a good population of Sitka deer, I don't remember when the season opens as it has been years since I lived there. As for things to do in Alaska where you can see animals and birds, the salmon runs are a great time of year for seeing bears and eagles in large groups. Some places offer cruises on smaller boats where you can see the bears and eagles feeding. Here's a site with some info on Alaska activities

Alaskan native culture is presented through storytelling, dancing, craft-making and simulated, life-sized villages representing each of the five main indigenous groups. Attraction type: Historic village; Educational site Art museum; History museum; Museum; Biking trail; Scenic/historic walking area; Ski area; Wildlife abounds in the form of whales, seals, sea lions, eagles, bears and deer.
