Smile Aurora Borealis Cruise?

We're in the planning stages of an Alaskan "adventure." Not sure if we're doing a cruise or tour, but one of the most important things is to see the Aurora Borealis. What part of Alaska is best in which to view the Auroras during the first two weeks of August? Apologies if this has already been answered. I can't begin to sort through all of the posts just yet!

Thanks!

Default Re: Aurora Borealis Cruise?

You will have to be very lucky to see the Northern Lights during August, the coast is usually cloudy and the interior of Alaska will still be light until about 11 p.m. or so. The best time to see the Northern Lights is during the winter months. Especially January February and March. Again the further North the better the view. Fairbanks has some outstanding views . You would want to be out of town. Chena Hot Springs is a very good vacation destination with hot springs and the Northern Lights it makes for an unforgettable experience. You may get a glimpse in the early August but again, you will not experience the Aurora anything like it is in the winter months. It has to be dark to really see the lights.
If your cruising up, it is possible to get a glimpse if your in clear weather, but again even in August you will have to be up late. They do have Aurora forecasts, the ship or the net maybe able to help you there. Try Anchorage Daily News online and check there weather page the also keep a forecast. I would highly suggest that if you plan a land tour. That you rent a motor home or car and do it on your own. The cruise companies tend to push a little to fast and it's better to explore on your own. If possible. Good luck, maybe you might just get lucky.
