Bolivia

Myth, legends, and mystery fill Bolivia with ancient wisdom. Take a tour of Bolivia and stop at Lake Titicaca, the highest natural lake in the world. Visit the Capital city of La Paz with 21,000-foot tall peaks. Climb the mountains of Bolivia and experience the thrill of snow squalls, hidden crevasses, and thin air.

Default Santiago, chile to the Uyuni Salt flats

Hi

I am planning a trip to South America in a few months. I have a flight that arrives in Santiago. I would then like to travel to Bolivia and see the salt flats and Lake Titicaca. Does anyone know of any tours or companies that go from santiago to the salt flats? Or how i would get from Santiago to see the salt flats? And then how i would get from the salt flats to lake Titicaca? Also, I will be travelling on my own. Does anyone who has been to Bolivia forsee any major problems with this as a lone female??

Any tips or advice would be appreciated!

There are several tours avaiable which go through the Salt Flats. One of the tours takes 3 days and means you can take in more of the surrounding areas. This tour and others like it travel from Uyuni - Jirira - Coipasa - Chipayas - Oruro.

This is an example of the type of tour available :

DAY 1

Departure from Uyuni at 09.00 a.m. towards the majestic Uyuni Salt Flat, in the journey you will be able to watch the diverse geographical accidents of the area.
Visit to Colchani Colchani, visit to the micro table salt manufactures where they will teach us the dried, shattered, iodized and pocketed of the table salt. To subsequently visit the Piles of Salt, Water eyes Salt Hotel and Lomo Pescado Island, where we will offer you a special meal or barbecue.
By the afternoon we will make a tour by the place enjoying the pan view of the great salt flat, 10 meters high cactus.
At 15:00 we will departure towards Jirita town on our journey we will watch flamingos at Tunupa Volcano foot and the impressive Sunset at the Salt Flat.
Lodging, dinner and rest.

DAY 2
Breakfast at 6:00 a.m.
Trekking to Tunupa Volcano with a pan view from the high we will observe Coipasa and Uyuni Sat Flats.
Snack.
Approximately at 15:00 p.m. we will return to the base camp area.
Dinner and rest, second night at Jirira.

DAY 3
Breakfast at 07:00 a.m.
We will continue our trip towards Oruro city, on the journey we will visit the Chipayas.
Snack before the arrival to Oruro.

INCLUDED SERVICES
- 4x4 Toyota Vehicle.
- Full board, snack, breakfast, and complete dinner.
- Lodging on the route.
- Mentioned visits at the itinerary.
- Duration: 2 Nights, 3 Days.

You could then arrange your trip to Lake Titicaca as there are several places in Santiago where you could book this, or would you rather travel from the Salt Flats to the Lake?

As far as travelling on your own is concerned traveling alone for females seems to be ok, It is common to see many females traveling alone.

It is always possible to find travel partners for this type of trip if you are feeling unsure. Doing as much research as you can squeeze into your life before you go helps to reap great rewards later on. Learning about your destination(s) allows you to have a good idea of what to expect and therefore a solid foundation on which to begin your adventure. Learning about the fundamental cultural differences is essential, and learning a few words of the language doesn't go amiss either.
Getting lost can open the door to an even more eventful adventure than you bargained for, but it can often happen at the most inopportune times. A good map is invaluable and so is some knowledge of the public transport system. For more information you could check out the Health and Safety section of the website.
