| Hi! I am currently living in Brazil and on 23 May my initial visa (90 dys) expired. I went to the police federal and was told not to panic and come back another day. I went there three more time and then was told that they cannot renew it now and i have to leave the country. I read up on the internet before coming here that i can stay up to 180 days and without a valid visa withing this period I will have to pay R$8 for each day of my stay. Also, came across an article that said that I have to apply for renewal 1 month before my initial visa expires (found this too late) and that the maximum fine is for 100 days i.e. R$820. My questions are: 1) What will happen if I leave the country and not pay for the time I stayed here without a valid visa (still within 180 legal days)? 2) Will I have any problems at the airport? will they let me off without paying? if i say i don't have the money? 3) Can I pay it on my return? Many thanks for all help David |

| If you read your visa it says up to 180 days. But it also says your stay is for 90 days and you can renew it for another 90 days. So unless you renew you are overstaying after 90 days. Also the 90 days renewal is at the will of the Federal Police. |

| You probably know by now that your visa is for 90 days and can be renewed for another 90 day if the Federal Police say you can. They do not have to renew. Basicly they will renew and will always renew if you have filed papers for to become a resident. |

I promised to report on my experiences with an overstay in Brasil (got 90 day tourist visa but was late to extend it for another 90 and eventually overstayed without hence suppose to pay around $400!). Well, it went really smooth! I flew from Manaus to SP and from there to London. No one bothered to ask me any questions at the check in. I waited 40 min before my take off and queued. After getting through the gates I realized it was the wrong queue i.e. for internal flights! Quickly run to the other one where I was the only person so went straight to the immigration officer desk and it was 20 min to my take off. He was chatting to a colleague and in the meantime scanned my passport. I noticed a page came up on a screen. It resembled my photo but am not 100% certain and didn't want to peek too much cause he'd get suspicious. He stamped my passport where my old entry/exit stamps are and let me go (I also flew in Dec until Jan last year for a holiday). I am changing my passport and will be going back on my return ticket to Manaus. Will let you all know how it went. Why do they complicate things for people who want to go and spend money there??? you might want to read lonelyplanet thorn forum (search by author davss) | |
