| Visas to Brazil I'm trying to get a visa to go to brazil in December. I applied for a tourist visa, and on my application it said i'm going to a language school there - my mistake. with a tourist visa, you can't attend any school. my application was returned with intructions to apply for a IV student visa but that's for people pursuing degree programs, so i'm not sure which visa to apply for now. i'll be at the language school for only 2 weeks, and other than that i'll be being a tourist. so do they need to know that i'm going to learn portuguese for two weeks there, or should I forget the school idea and just get a tourist visa? or apply for a different student visa (if so, which one - I, IV...?)
Hope someone has some ideas, thanks,

| Re: Visas to Brazil Hi Crock,
I hate to encourage people to not be entirely honest on a visa application, but in your case, you don't need to mention that you will be studying for 2 weeks. Student Visas, as you found out, are only for long-term students. Just put that you are going as a tourist, and if they ask you (which I highly doubt they will) if you are still planning on taking the classes, just tell them no (and then take them anyway). The rules for things like this are not nearly as strict as in the US and Europe, and no one will be checking up on you. (I for example, have lived in Peru for about 2 years on a tourist visa that I just continue renewing and no one has said anything about it yet...). Basically Brazil started making tourists apply for Visas in response to the US's Visa policy.
Have a Great Trip!!!
Happy Travels,
Lola

| Expired Visa in Brazil and returning home Hi!
I am currently living in Brazil and on 23 May my initial visa (90 dys) expired. I went to the police federal and was told not to panic and come back another day. I went there three more time and then was told that they cannot renew it now and i have to leave the country. I read up on the internet before coming here that i can stay up to 180 days and without a valid visa withing this period I will have to pay R$8 for each day of my stay. Also, came across an article that said that I have to apply for renewal 1 month before my initial visa expires (found this too late) and that the maximum fine is for 100 days i.e. R$820.
My questions are:
1) What will happen if I leave the country and not pay for the time I stayed here without a valid visa?
2) Will I have any problems at the airport? will they let me off without paying? if i say i don't have the money?
3) Can I pay it on my return?
Many thanks for all help

crock | OMG it's so simple you apply for a touriest visa. Thats all. Going to a school for 2 weeks does not qualify for anything nor do you learn anything |
