Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. from 1945 to 1980 launches in October. The arts campaign brings together 60-plus cultural institutions in Southern California, all explaining how Los Angeles turned into a major player in the art world.

Visitors can download guides to get the most out of the experiences, and some are tuned for family fun. Pacific Standard Time is a joint initiative of the Getty Foundation and the jointly initiated by the Getty Foundation and the Getty Research Institute

The big opening is slated for Oct. 1 and 2 with more than 24 gallery/exhibit openings.

I think one of the main reasons Los Angeles turned into the number one major player in the art world between the 60's was because many artists took advantage of the new technologies like fast-drying acrylic paint, Verifax machines, and Polaroid instant cameras they had available.

Also, another reason why southern Cali (particularly LA) art and artists were so popular and well received was because they reflected the struggles and movements happening in the 60's of feminists, chicanos, African Americans, and gays.
