Default California Highway One

Hello,

I'm planning a trip to the States in 2010, with an intention to visit California's Highway 1 in the last few days of March. My challenge is that I'm coming without a car. I found public transportation to and in the Monterey area, coming from San Francisco, yet the only public transportation (Amtrak & Greyhound) I found from that area to the San Luis Obispo area goes through Highway 101, which means I'll be missing the views of Highway 1.

Can you recommend me on alternative public transportation and/or cruises? If not, given the fact I'll be spending 3 nights in the Monterey area and 2 nights in the Morro Bay area, how unfortunate is it really that I miss the road part in between?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

I would suggest booking a sightseeing tour with a company like Monetery tours where you'll be able to experience lovely scenic views of Highway One, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Cannery Row, 17-Mile Drive, Lone Cypress at Pebble Beach, Carmel-by-the-Sea and return trip through Silicon Valley.

I would advise you to rent a car for at least 1 day probably 25 us would be enough also they usualy have good weekend rates driving yourself is a great way to see highway 1 and you should really try to see the giant redwood trees to the north about 3 hours from monterey tours are nice but pretty spendy

Hi There :)

I live in Lompoc on the Central Coast of California, with Highway 1 literally dividing my town in half. I noticed this blog while looking for some pictures for a school project, and I knew this would be right up my alley.

It is true that both Greyhound and Amtrak in Northern California have a preference for highway 101. However, smaller transportation companies (like an intra-county system) will often follow highway. If you don't mind getting on and off a whole lot of buses, that might solve your problem.

On the Central Coast and for the northern half of Southern California, Amtrak follows Highway 1 from San Luis Obispo until Hollywood, an easy 250 miles of coastline.

You could take a bus to San Luis, board the Pacific Surfliner train, take it to Los Angeles, stay there for a few days, and then make your way back North or take another Amtrak train south to San Diego.

It is one of the most beautiful train rides in the world if done in the afternoon (the fog here makes the city of London seem crystal clear) and it's something any visitor to our area shouldn't miss.
