Yungang Grotto is located about 8 miles west of Datong city center, but to be perfectly frank, Yungang Grotto has nothing to rival Beijing attractions such as the Great Wall and the Summer Palace Beijing. Also, the five-hour journey from Beijing to the city isn't worth it. Having said this, Yungang Grotto is often included in religious tours of China so if you're going to China with an organized tour, you'll probably get to see them.

If you want to do the trip there by yourself, you can travel to Datong by bus or train, from where you can take two buses to the caves, stopping off at Xin Kai Li, or take a short taxi ride directly to the grotto from downtown Datong.

Well, Yungang Grottoes or Yunguang Caves is a popular attractions in Datong China. As an official UNESCO World Heritage Site, Yungang is the treasure-house of ancient Chinese sculpture. All together the site is composed of 252 grottoes with over 51,000 Buddha statues.
If you travel to Datong by train, you can take bus 3-2 (50 minutes, from 6am to 6pm) from the Datong train stations.
