China

China is home to some of the richest history and tradition in the world. You can view modernity in the large cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. You can also see monuments and proof of cultural history, like the Great Wall of China and the Silk Road. Finally, there's no shartage of natural wonders, such as the Himalayas (more specifically Mt. Everest) and the Yangtze River.

Default Top things to do in China

Great to see you all just added a guide on China. I'm currently planning a trip to China and was hoping you could give me your advice on the top 5 places to see in China. I only have 14 days so I'll need to use my days wisely. I must see the Great Wall of China and I'd like to visit some cities but which ones?

Hi, Jack,
glad to know you will spend two weeks in China. The capital city Beijing is the first choice to see. Because it is the Chinese miniature, the cultural and political center. There are many historic places around Beijing, which are worth seing. Besides Beijing, Shanghai, Shengzhen, Guangzhou and Hainan are also good places to visit, each having its own culture and customs. By visiting these places, you will know more about China.

Jack, after you marvel at the Great Wall of China (trust me it's as good as advertised), get your butt to Shanghai and find the Crystal Jade Restaurant. You'll thank me later!

I've also heard Macau is slowly turning into a bigger version of Vegas if you can believe that, so if you're into gambling you can't pass that up!

Let's see if I can fill out my top 5:
1. Great Wall (actually, let's just call this Beijing and tell you to see the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and Tianamen (sp?) Square in one shot)
2. Shanghai (the food...my god the FOOD, as well as The Bund)
3. Tibet (not sure how far west your travels can take you, but if they can don't miss it!)
4. Macau
5. Yangtze River (never done it, but plan to on the next trip!)

I recently completed a trip to China from the UK all the way by train, 7,650 miles !
I entered China the best way possible, on the Trans-Siberian Railway coming from Moscow, though the Mongolian Steppes, across the Gobi Desert, alongside The Great Wall of China for many miles before entering Beijing - I then went on by train to Shanghai. The Great Wall was great but also the surrounding countryside was spectacular. Beijing was disappointing but Shanghai made up for it -

that sounds like quite the trip! i have a couple questions if you don't mind...first off, how was Moscow? were you there long enough to get a guage on people's attitudes towards you/your traveling companions? my trip there (awhile back) wasn't great. maybe cause i'm american ;)

secondly, how was mongolia? did the train go straight through or were you able to take a little bit of it in? i've never been to mongolia but am fascinated by it.

Frankly speaking, the most popular and important tour in china is Beijing, 3 days, Shanghai 3 days, Xian 2 days, Guilin 3 days. Guilin is without dispute the most scenic city in China. Hilltops pop up from nowhere like trees in the forest and they are shaped like buns, camels, fishes, saw-teeth, horses, etc. It is a city you must visit or you will miss those beautiful landscape there. Rivers flow around like green silk ribbons while the hills reveal themselves as jade hair-pins. Guilin embraces great landscapes like green hills, clear waters, pretty rocks and fantastic caves. In Guilin, you will find Osmanthus trees all over the place and the blooming season is between late September to early November. Guilin is a must-visit City for your China trip. you are welcome to contact at jadeleo66@yahoo.com

Hi there!

I'm going to HK with my family this next. We're going to stay there for 3 days. Our next stop is Shengzhen - although I really don't have any idea what we're going to do there.

Any good place where I can bring kids?

I've always thought the idea behind Window of the World was a cool one. Sure it's probably really dumbed-down and not at all like seeing the real thing (and maybe some of it's in no way educational), but for kids it could be a really cool way to learn about a whole slew of different cultures and history. All in one easy-to-navigate location. A lot cheaper than flying all over the world at least!

If you do check it out let me know if it'd be worth my time.
