If you would like to visit the Great Wall closest to Beijing City, please choose Juyongguan Section of Great Wall. In order to visit the most preserved part, please go to Badaling Section. If you have interest in hiking, you can choose Simatai or Jinshanling Sections which are located 120 kilometers away from Beijing, where you can enjoy the most fancinating natural scenery and the historical ruins of Great Wall.

Yes of course, Badaling is the best preserved section of Great Wall of China and it's vey close to Beijing. Mutianyu is also one of the popular spot, but less crowded than Badalin. I have visited only Mutianyu and it was spectacular & absolutely amazing. This section of the Great Wall of China is 20 km long and located 79 km northeast of Beijing, worth a visit. The Jinshanling Great Wall which is located about 130 km from downtown Beijing is also a great section and it was named after the mountain called Jinshan Mountains. You 'll get breathtaking views here. If any body is planning for a China tour then don't miss to visit Mutianyu, a wonderful part of Great Wall of China :)

It's hard to pick a favourite - each section has its own strengths. The ease of getting to Badaling makes it a good option. And although it is crowded you can still find your own little section of wall if you walk far enough. Far fewer people at Mutianyu, plus some wonderful views and it's still quite easy to get to. Then the trek from Jinshanling to Simatai is wonderful, though the persistent vendors all along the way can be irritating. And it's quite a long trip out to Jinshanling, especially if you're doing it by public transport. Personally I would only head to Jinshanling or Simatai for the purpose of doing the hike - I wouldn't bother going out there just to visit one section.

Children could handle any of the sections mentioned above - all of them have cable cars up. But I wouldn't recommend a visit to Simatai alone as it is particularly steep. Mainly, it would depend on how you're getting there. If you're taking public transport then Badaling is best as the trip is quick and easy. They also might enjoy the train down the wall at Badaling. If you're taking private transport then it depends how well they handle long drives.
