Default Colorado Fall Colors

Independence Pass Road southeast of Aspen, Colo.

Where: A 44-mile, high-altitude scenic route in White River National Forest

Stars of the show: Aspen trees' quivering leaves, translucent when lighted by the sun, turn a shimmering gold. Cottonwoods get an orange-tinged yellow, and scrub oaks gleam red. In a state with "color" in its name, it doesn't get much better than this.

Color peak: now to Friday

Default Fall colors in Colorado

Fall colors in Colorado tend to peak around the end of September and in early October.

Mike Nelson, the chief meteorologist from Denver's Channel 7 New suggests some pretty amazing drives:

Grant to Guanella Pass
CO. Highway 103 from Evergreen Parkway to Echo Lake
Colorado 67 from Divide to Cripple Creek
Leadville to Vale

Fall leaves in Colorado are a sight to see. From Vail to Aspen, there are many locations to enjoy the seasonal color changes. A hiking adventure is one of the best ways to get an up-close view of the aspens, pines, and spectacular mountain views. Take advantage of the trails at Rocky Mountain State Park, Estes Park, Roosevelt National Forest, and Poudre Canyon. If you prefer a scenic drive, the drive to Echo Lake via Hwy 103 offers several spots for stopping and taking pictures.

I always think of Colorado in the snow, so it's a treat to think about Colorado in the fall!

A good place to start would be the Miata Mountain Gold event sponsored by the Peak to Peak Miata Club of Colorado on September 22nd - 25th at Breckenridge, Colorado:

Other than that most any Colorado mountain pass from late September through October should yield plenty of Fall colors. The local TV news stations keep people informed of which areas and times are best.
