Default Costa Rica - Havanna

I will be visiting Costa Rica in June of "09". While there I would be interested in spending a few days in Havanna. I know there are flights between the two countries. Being a US citizen, I am not sure how to arrange the visit to Cuba from San Jose, and if visas are required. I don't want to get a Cuban stamp in my passport. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks very much.

..through Cuban customs without a passport stamp...very important(neither one of us can afford the $10,000 fine)...then, to our home for the next few days, the Copacabana. As we drove to our Hotel I think we had a lot of mixed emotions...we weren't sure what to expect....once we got to the hotel we didn't know if we wanted to grab a drink at the hotel bar...go to bed or what..we opted for bed but even when we woke up the next morning we weren't sure what to do...In this case I think a lonely planet book would've helped immensely.
