| One fast train. In France recently the TGV ("Train à Grande Vitesse") which is French for "high-speed train" hit 574.8 km/hour (357 mph) in a test run, breaking the world record for speed. During commuter trips the train tops out at about 200 mph but as you can see given a long enough straightaway the thing can dig down and find a second gear. Here's a video of the record-setting test run. It's pretty impressive. And here's an English recount from the only British journalist aboard the train which gives a nice picture of what it's like. When are these things going to get to America??? |
