Our friend lives in Provence and we're planning to visit her. We'll be flying in to Nice and staying in Saint-Raphael which is between Cannes & Aix-en-Provence. Any suggestions on things to do? We plan to rent a car at the airport and we are staying just a week. p.s. we've never been to Europe so are we making a mistake not going to Paris? Thanks. D.

hi D, St Raphael is a lovely place and taking an afternoon stroll along St Raphael's old fishing port is a great thing to do. Other things to do include sightseeing landmarks such as: -The neo-Byzantine Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire, which overlooks the harbor. - The 12th-century Église St-Pierre-des-Templiers, located in the old town, is a lovely miniature-scale Romanesque church. Also, don't forget to visit the Marine Archaeology Museum, which displays a collection of shipwrecks as well as artifacts such as jewelry, spearheads, pottery shards, and skulls. Paris is the largest and is home to many impressive sights and it is definitely a must if you're going to France. I would suggest a Paris tour to see the Notre Dame cathedral, the Arc de Triomphe, the gothic Saint Chapelle, and of course the Eiffel Tower.

hi again, The cheapest way to get around in Paris it's to use public transportation such as buses and the metro. I would suggest to use the metro for convenience and buy a weekend or week travel pass depending on your needs. I believe a week travel pass is around 10 euros so it's much cheaper than car rental, not to mention you'll avoid the headache that it is driving in Paris.

Can you recommend any independent tour guides? Also, I was looking at car rentals for the time we are in Saint Raphael, Provence, etc. It seems that most of the cars offered for rental are manual transmission. Would that be what I should expect?

Two of the most popular tour guides are En France Tours, and Discover France. En France Tours offers guided tours in France, including the Louve museum, Normandy, and the Loire Valley Castles. Discover France offers a selection of Tours in France, including a Paris tour package. Renting an automatic car in France through a major car-rental company should not be a problem, particularly if you arrange to pick it up at an international airport, but an automatic will cost more. To check out availability have a look at Paris rental cars
