| Stone Mountain is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States with millions of visitors annually. The massive park has plenty of fun things to do from boating on the lake to riding the tram to the top of the mountain. The views from the top are spectacular and you can see for miles. There are some interesting historical facts about Stone Mountain such as its age. The mountain is approximately 300 million years old. The base spans both Georgia and part of North Carolina and it is the largest monolith in the world. The first written record mentioning the mountain dates back to 1567. During the Civil War, General Sherman while making his way through Georgia destroyed the city of New Gibraltar that sat at the base of the mountain. Sculpting of the three confederate generals-Davis, Lee, and Jackson-began in 1923 and were not completed until 1972. |

| Stone Mountain is awesome, especially at Christmas. The mountain is such a cool thing...just plopped out there in the Georgia landscape. These days, it's really close to Atlanta and the park around there is packed with attractions. It's worth staying after dark so you can see the laser show. |

| Stone Mountain is fabulous any time of the year. So much to do within the park. Definitely recommend any one visiting Atlanta to plan on spending the day to experience everything the park has to offer. And yes, the laser show is spectacular and well worth seeing.

| As far as I know Crystal Mountain was the original name in 1567 given by the early explorers until settlers renamed Stone Mountain as a landmark. I know also that the KKK used Stone Mountain frequently as a symbolic meeting place for them to meet up, but after the Civil Rights law that was passed they had to leave. |
