making a trip to Dresden by rail

Hi there,

can anyone please advise us on the possibilty of making a trip to Dresden by rail when we have our five day stay in Berlin in summer? is it true Dresden is just a couple of hours by train? Would we use the ICE train for such a trip? Would it be too much to do in a day trip?

I passed Dresden on my train trip from Berlin to Prague last year, and I would say that Dresden is an overnight trip at best as it's a long trip on the train. Having said this, I sort of wished I had more time and could have stopped for a few days in Dresden as it's meant to be a beautiful city.

I had a look for you and there is a very early train that leaves at 5:40am from Berlin, which you could take and catch a nap on the way there and a late train back that you could sleep on also.

By the way, Potsdam is on the S-Baun so, you could spend 2 days there alone, one day on a tour, and one day on bikes. Believe me, it's a great place to visit.
