Germany

Germany has rich culture tradition and beautiful landscapes. The famous Oktoberfest can be experienced starting in September through October. For those traveling in the Christmas season, be sure to stop by Kris Kringle Mart. Only hours away from Munich are resorts in Germany and ski areas are best found at the Bavarian Alps.

Default Dad's 60th bday to Germany-Black Forest

Hey all,
I'm trying to surprise my dad with a trip to Germany for his 60th bday which is in December. The trip would be taken in the Spring. I am hoping to do a fly and drive thing. None of the pre-packaged tours seem to suit my needs. My mom grew up in the Black Forest so that has to be explored. Castles also would be great to see. Tourist areas are okay too. I want to plan a trip for a week so too much driving shouldn't be involved so we don't spend all our time driving. I'm trying to keep costs down because it will be four adults going (mom, dad, me and my sister).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't even know how to start an itinerary for a country I know nothing about. I've been to Berlin and Munich myself but I was on a tour bus so it really doesn't count!

Thanks!
Aimee

The last time I was in Germany was in December and it was cold! good thing your waiting until the spring.. The Black Forest is known for its cuckoo clocks, honey, Black Forest ham,Black Forest Cake, Pork Knuckle and Black Forest gateau. Also the setting for many fairy tales.

The cities of Freiburg and Baden-Baden are popular tourist destinations on the western edge of the Black Forest and for outdoors you may want to visit the Triberg Waterfalls which are the highest waterfalls in Germany.

I can recommend one hotel in near Lake Titisee:

Write back if you have any more questions.

Koblenz is a perfect destination for exploring the castles along the Rhine. We stayed at Hotel Mercure which was beautiful, a stone's throw from the Rhine and the boat cruises and very, very affordable. Maybe you could drive between Koblenz and The Black Forest Region (we stayed in Baden-Baden) but I think that you may have to fly into Frankfort which is right between the two. I loved Germany so much I am already planning a trip back.
