Talking Rothenburg

Ok so I was suggested to go to Rothenburg....My uncle was stationed around there in the Army... So my questions are:

Where are some inexpensive places to dine?
As well and lodge?
Which airport is closest?

Hi there,

I can suggest Altfrankische Weinstube which offers fine dining at moderate prices as well as lodging. It is located near St. Jakob's Kirche (St. Jacob's Church).

Also, Stuttgart airport will be the closest to Rothenburg and it is about 2 hours drive by car.

Hope this helps

Ok, THanks! Now, would it make more sense just to go on a day trip to Rothenberg? I am planning on going to Berlin first...but wanna take the rail to Rothenberg. What are your suggestions for that?

Hi again,

It all depends, if your uncle is stationed near Rothenberg, I would think to stay in Rothenberg. However, How long are you staying in Germany? Are you traveling to Germany primarily to see your uncle or do you plan to tour Germany as well?

Sorry, I thought your uncle was still stationed in the army. Apologies for that! In that case, it makes more sense to take a day trip to Rothenburg.

It takes around 7 hours by train from Berlin to Rothenburg. Rothenburg lies on the Steinach-Rothenburg rail line, with frequent connections to all major German cities, including Nürnberg and Stuttgart.

Hotel accommodation in Berlin I can suggest, is the Hotel Pension Columbus near the Ku'damm. Rates start at $70 but check before you book through them.

A good and affordable place to dine in Berlin is:

Garage which is located near Kurfürstendamm and has friendly service. Main courses are between 8 and 13 Euros and have a good selection of wine between 14 and 30 Euro per bottle.

Hope this helps

Since you'll be in Germany for 7 days, I would suggest buying a 7 day pass as you'll be using some sort of transport to get around so, I reckon, this would be most cost effective for you. U-bahn and S-bahn are the quickest way to get around within the city.

You can buy 7 day passes from S-Bahn ticket machines, S-Bahn Berlin customer centers and ticket counters at S-Bahn stations.

Prices for 7 day pass:

7 days ticket Berlin zones AB = €26,20

7 days ticket Berlin zones ABC = €32,30

Prices for single tickets are as follows:

Zones AB €6.10
Zones ABC €6.50

Hope this helps

That helps sooo much thank you! Now that 32.30 in Euros right? Now to take one of the two transportation services would both go to rothenburg or which one would be the better bet?

Yes, it is in Euros (around $45). The tickets I mentioned are for traveling within Berlin city withing zones ABCD. To get to Rothenburg you will need to take the long-distance trains such as the Inter-City (IC) and Inter-City-Express (ICE).

Now, the long distance trains are a little expensive (between $150 -$200). Having said this, it is possible to travel to Rothenburg using regional trains only if you travel in the Bavaria area. This way you can use the Bayern-Ticket, that allows great savings when traveling inside a single German state.

Currently, the Bayern-Ticket for individuals is around two-thirds the price of a standard one way fare between Berlin and Rothenburg.

Hope this helps
