Sounds like you're hitting some of the nice spots in Germany. I have great memories from WAY back in the day of Heidelberg, and I think you and your family would love it. Nice combination of history and modernity, it's really a beautiful town. I think the Heidelberg castle was definitely a highlight of my trip there and would recommend it to you. How old are the grand daughters? A lot of other "tour" type activities might not be as plentiful since your trip is in the middle of winter, but the town is beautiful enough that you should find lots to do.

Give it my regards!

If the grand daughters are of a younger age, the Stuttgart Zoo and Botanical Garden (Wilhelma) is open all year. There's also a tourist info office across the street from the train station in Stuttgart that has maps of the city complete with recommendations on self-guided tours (since as has been posted before, most tour guides are shut down in February). They may even have small guided tours for you to use.
