| hey guys, we're traveling from the states and we'll be hiring a car to get around in Germany. It'd be our first time driving there and I wanted to ask what the German Autobahn highway is like? what's the speed limit? |

| hi there, The German Autobahn is a very safe highway with no speed restrictions and speeds are left pretty much to the discretion of each motorist. Having said this, the German government does advise that you should not go faster than 130 km/hr (81 mph). I would say to avoid Fridays, weekends, and holidays, as the Autobahn can get pretty busy. Apart from this, the German Autobahn is much like most American highways, and if you break down, alert the nearest authorities and place a warning triangle about 600 feet behind your car. Another thing to remember is that it is actually illegal to run out of gas while on the Autobahn, so keep an eye on the fuel gauge. Hope this helps Vacationbuddy

| The german government advises you that you go at least 130 km/h - this is the recommended average speed. If you go slower, you need to stay in the far right lane but people might flashing their lights at you. Also - on most parts of the Autobahn there is a speed limit these days. Just watch the signs on the side of the road - speed limits are clearly posted. |

| It is not true that you have to go at least 130 km/h on the Autobahn. It is the recommended top speed when there is no speed limit. You don't have to stay in the right lane if you are slower than 130 km/h and want to overtake. But you are not allowed to block the left lane(s) for longer than necessary, when you are travelling pretty slow. I know what I am talking about because I live here in Germany. |
