Default Santorini Greece

Santorini Greece

Santorini in Greece is a popular destination due to its Spectacular landscapes and its submerged volcano crater. It is located south of the Cycladic Islands and covers an area of 96km2 with a stunning coastline that runs for 69 kilometres.

From April to August, the weather in Santorini is bright and sunny. From September and on, it is not rare to see some cloudy days but rainfall is very rare. The humidity level is very high. The days when you can see Crete clearly are really rare but not inexistent!! The weather is good enough to take good pictures of the volcano.

In Santorini there are 13 villages, each with there own attractions to visiting tourists.

In Fira you can see fantastic panoramic views of the volcano. This is the Islands Capital so can be relatively busy with locals and tourists making use of a variety of shops. There is a great choice for shoppers here with traditional to modern shops, souvenir shops or jewellery shops all available. Also in the area there is a great choice of bars, restaurants or clubs for those who enjoy a bit of nightlife. The landscapes in Fira are fantastic and the architecture around the village is still very traditional. A familiar sight on the postcards of the area is a blue domed church which can be visited all year round.

In Firostefani 2km North of Fira you will find this is also is a traditional village. Perched on a cliff Firostefani offers amazing views over the volcano, the sea and the sunset.

Perissa is a beach resort which is more touristy and boasts an amazing endless black sandy beach.
The village offers lot of rooms, restaurant and bars but is usually very quiet in the winter months.
The buildings in Perissa are newly built so this village feels different to the more traditional locations already discussed. Here you can take a path up the the ruins of ancient Thera (by donkey if you wish) or you can visit the chapel of Agia Irena built in the 16th Century.

The village of Oia is 11km North of Fira and claims to be the most beautiful and picturesque village in Santorini. Again situated on the edge of a cliff Oia has blue domed churches, sun-bathed verandas, and stepped streets. There are also plenty of tourist shops but it is a less commercial town than Fira. Here you can visit the Maritime Museum which has exhibits from the marine life of the area or you can check out local galleries. from Oia you can go to the port of Ammoudi where you will find a beach, some nice taverns, floating pumice stones, and small boats that will take you to Thirassia.

Other Villages in Santorini are Pyrgos, Akrotiri, Megalochori, Imerovigli, Messaria, Emporo, Finikia, Karderados, andMesa & Exo Gonia. It would depend on what you are looking for out of your vacation on where you would decide to visit. Like the other villages mentioned these places offer either mountainous landscape or a quieter beach location. Unlike bigger Greek Islands like Rhodes or Crete the Villages of Santorini offer more traditional surroundings and would suit people who are interested in experiencing the true culture of Greece.

What ever village you choose there will be a choice of Things To Do
