| Guam is just the place for the “born to shop” crowd. The island’s duty-free status means that name-brand merchandise and other items often are less expensive than in their country of origin. Most of the resort hotels at Tumon Bay have a lobby arcade and other specialty shops located within walking distance along Pale San Vitores Road. In addition to the elegant designer items, these stores feature Micronesian handicrafts, island clothing and beachwear. Duty Free Shopping Guam’s duty free shopping status means that no tariffs are added to many quality name brand international products. Lower prices on such items as watches, perfumes, leather goods, spirits, and other luxury products can be found. Shopping Centers The Micronesia Mall in Dededo, the Guam Premier Outlets in Tamuning, K-Mart in Upper Tumon, and the Agana Shopping Center are Guam’s largest retail outlets. Each of these facilities offer everything for individual, home and office use, plus luxury and gift items. Several restaurants located at each shopping center are gathering spots for local business people as well as weary shoppers. Chamorro Village ( I Sengsong Chamorro Village) Centrally located along Hagåtña Bay, the cluster of shops is reminiscent of the old Spanish market. Fresh produce, the catch of the day, local handicrafts, and various curios surround stalls of eateries that serve international dishes. A main hall is used for occasional shows featuring local talent. Flea Markets For shoppers who rise with the sun, Guam’s popular flea markets are a special treat. Every Saturday and Sunday morning at 6 a.m., the Dededo Flea Market, located on Marine Drive, welcomes throngs of bargain hunters with the intent of finding the best buys among rows and rows of new and used merchandise. Buyers can find everything from lawn mowers to baby clothes, plants to pets. Hot snacks and beverages are available, and many people enjoy an island-style breakfast of fried rice, eggs and meat while shopping. Retail Stores Guam’s proximity to Asia means that handcrafted and manufactured products from such countries as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Bali, Thailand, and the Philippines are available at bargain prices. Several stores specialize in silk dresses from Hong Kong and Korea, while still others offer Asian wood furniture from the Philippines, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. There are also fine wines and other spirits, gourmet and ethnic foods, spices, jewelry, art work, and, of course, island handicrafts. Chanel P.O. | We are building a shopping community website which is going to be much different and better than anything else out there. Can you experienced sellers and buyers suggest ways for us to attract sellers to our site once it is live? Selling items on the site will be free. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Josh |
