Well since you've already tried Oahu, then I say give Maui a try! Not sure what kind of flights you looked into or how you've planned your route. You can make it to both islands! Inter-island flights aren't that bad in prices. So depending on how much time you have you can go to Oahu and see/do all that there is to see/do there then go Maui or vice versa.

I've only been to two islands, Maui and the Oahu, and seeing as how I never left the Honolulu airport, I'd have to recommend Maui! Last edited by joe; 08-18-2006 at 09:56 AM. Reason: I'm dumb, I thought Honolulu was on the Big Island

Oahu- The most touristy of the islands and personally my least favorite but I'm not into the big city crowds when traveling. My favorite here is the North Shore Maui- Beautiful Beaches, Exellent hotels, great out of the way destinations! just take a trip down Hana Highway! but be prepared for some rough roads. My vote is Maui

Having spent time on just about every island in Hawaii, I'd have to say Maui. You will not be dissapointed by the gorgeous beaches; its sort of the idyllic Hawaii vacation in my opinion. Although Maui is small, you might enjoy the chance to not only stay at a nice hotel and hang out at the beach, but also take a tour of the whole thing. You learn a little more about local life, depending on the amount of time you plan to spend on your vacation.

There's a reason why the local saying is "Maui no ka 'oi" -- "Maui is the best." Oahu is certainly my least favorite of the islands. While it doesn't lack for charm if you get away from Waikiki, most people tend to stay based there -- missing most of the point of what makes Hawaii so magical! Maui truly is spectacular. While you've got touristy spots like Lahaina and Kihei, there are large portions of the island that seem virtually undiscovered. On the more-beaten path, the Road to Hana and sunrise/sunset atop Haleakala are musts. But if you want to get a little bit off the beaten path, try pitching a tent at Wai'anapanapa State Park and catch a full moon over the black-sand beach -- simply spell-binding. Whether you're camping or staying at one of the swank Wailea resorts, you're going to fall for the place. Flights from Oahu on Hawaiian or Aloha go throughout the day, and if you can rouse yourself for a 5am departure, you can probably get a one-way flight for 40 bucks. (If not, you probably won't have to pay much more than $70 each way.) Easy and worth every last penny. Enjoy! Chris

Now now....let's not *completely* cross off Oahu off the list. I know I'm completely biased, being that I grew up there, but like all of you have said, if you get outside of Waikiki, then it's ok. I'd have to agree, while Waikiki makes Oahu one of the less appealing islands, it still holds some great features. For those that love to go outdoors, why not try the Diamond Head Trail? Yes, this is at the end of Waikiki but it is an amazing view once you've finished the trail. There's always Pali Lookout. Or how about Hanauma Bay? For more of the quiet beaches, try out Lanikai Beach in Kailua. So, while I still think Maui will be a good change of pace, there's still lots to do on Oahu. Like everyone said, just stay on the outer ends of Waikiki.

It depends what you’re looking for. If you looking for night life and shopping Waikiki on Oahu is the place to be. My first trip to Hawaii I stayed on Oahu both at Turtle Bay and at one of high rise hotels in Waikiki and I had a great time but now that I’ve experienced Maui I don’t think I would go back. Personally I like being a tourist I just don’t like being around gobs of them and I think that’s why Maui appeals to me.
