Question Best geographic area on Maui to stay?

Hi all,

I'm still contemplating whether or not me and my wife will go to Maui. It's not that I don't want to go, it's that I'm not sure if I want to part with the dough.

But, does anyone have any ideas on the best area on the island to stay? North / south / east / west side of the island and why? Also, if you know of any cool unknown little places to stay that would be great.

Thanks for all of your help.

Well I'm not sure what type of accommodations you're looking for but Hotel Hana Maui definitely has some great options.

If you really want a breakdown of North, south and all that, it depends what you're in to.

North side is for surfing. Here you'll find some great bed and breakfasts.

South side is more of your relaxing tropical island scene. You've got your sunbathers, luxury resorts, and rollerbladers on the sidewalk. There are some condos that you may look into renting.

East side is more jungle-like. The area is a bit more damp and raw.

West side is the popular place to be. You definitely came to enjoy the sun (not that you can't get it everywhere else) Here you've got every class of accommodation, shopping options, and many activities to enjoy.

Well, I'm not sure how much you've planned as far as spending 'dough' but maybe we can recommend some things if you tell us what kinds of things you and your wife like to do on vacation.

I've been to Maui and FULLY enjoyed it. The West side is mostly the historic town of Lahaina. It is definitely a great little party town. There are great restaurants, little mom and pop shops, jewelry on the Front Street. Happy travels!

We have been to Maui 4 times and really enjoyed our stay there. We prefer Kehei on the west side, there are many great beaches there., and the sun always seems to shine there!

There is also Upcountry Maui (Kula, Makawao, Pukalani). It is a bit more of a drive to get to the beaches (about a half hour), but you are close to hiking, horseback riding, bike tours, wine tasting at Tedeschi Vineyards and visiting the volcano - Haleakala.

Also, it can be quite a bit less expensive if you rent a nice cottage.
