We're thinking about a trip to Maui in September and would love some recommendations. It will be my husband and I, our 2 kids and 2 active grandparents. we're looking for A 2-3 bedroom condo with a full kitchen and very close to a calm beach. We would also love to avoid renting a car (is this even possible?) If we don't have a car, how limited will we be in our excursions? thanks

I spent a week in Maui a couple of years ago with my little cousins and loved it. We rented a condo advertised in the SF Chron and it worked well for us, although it would be too small for your group. If you are looking for quiet and no crowds I recommend the Wailea area. It's a bit more expensive, but absolutely beautiful and Makena beach is just around the corner. By the way, you really do need a car just about anywhere in Hawaii (except maybe Waikiki!). Maui has great beaches and some nice small towns to go exploring. It also has a terrific Acquarium that is right on the coast. I hope you enjoy it too!

My wife who is in a wheelchair, myself, her caregiver my in laws spent 12 days in Maui at a condo complex in Maaelea (sp?) This is the center part of the island on the coast half way between kehea and Lahaina. Forgive the spelling. We had a great time. Went to the Old Lahaina Luau, snorkeling, aquarium, etc... I would defineitely get a rental car. They will provide child seats if needed. Maui is kind of spread out so wheels are a necessity. If you want the name of the condo complex let me know. It was great and just what you are looking for. Kind of quiet, on the beach, a small complex, and yet centrally located. You can look out your sliding glass door at Molokini, which is where I went diving. The unit we stayed in was handicap accessible - but there are several units there that are for rent. Let me know if you need anymore info...meade_biz@msn. you will need to put the com after the . because these sites tend to block email addresses. Peter
