Default Where to stay in Maui

My girlfriend and I are spending a week in Maui and are wondering what city to stay in. We like to surf, snorkel, and hang out at the beach but are looking for somewhere a that's not so crowded but still close to things to do and see.

Try the Royal Kahana hotel, it's part of the Outrigger Group. The rooms are nice; it's right on the beach and it's nearby, although it looks like it's far away from the downtown (Lahaina), it's only a 10 minute drive and far from traffic. They have "happy hour" every night. There are lots of restaurants across the street in the shopping center, a large grocery store is a couple minutes away and a travel center (Orbitz or Expedia?) in the lobby to help you book trips. We stayed there a yr ago and the staff was really nice. Our room was a studio on the 10th floor, and while not oceanfront, we had a view of the ocean. I saw whales going by! We rented by walking into the office.

I have a friend that rented a place there this past October. She booked it by going to a for rent by owner website and was very happy with her apartment. Good luck!
