I hear great things about Sun Valley, but I also hear it's very expensive. There's some great ski deals to be had at the smaller resorts though ... Magic Mountain, Pomerelle, Pebble Creek. I haven't had a chance to get out and ski the western part of the state or the panhandle. What's good up there? Oh, and I have to mention Grand Targhee, even tho technically in Wyoming. What an amazing place! Driggs, ID - just down the road from the resort - is such a great little tourist town.

Hi there, Definitely, smaller resorts have more character and makes getting around easier. They offer a relaxed and a chilled atmosphere that you cant find in bigger resorts. Also, if you are a beginner a smaller resort offers a comforting atmosphere where you can gain self confidence. Schweitzer Mountain is fantastic. Located at Sandpoint in the panhandle it has a vertical drop of 2,400 feet which is second only to Sun Valley's 3,400 feet. The Mountain is spread out over two huge bowls and has 82 runs, operated by 10 lifts. Also, the lack of crowds makes Schweitzer an ideal skiing heaven. VacationBuddy

If you are looking for a Idaho ski resort in the western part, then Tamarack resort is an excellent choice. The speciality of the Tamarack resort is, it's a family friendly four season resort and ice fishing is very popular during winter season when Lake Cascade is frozen. My cousin is living in Sun Valley and I visited his place few years back and got a chance to visit both Idaho ski resorts, Tamarack and Sun Valley. As you said, the Sun Valley is bit expensive compared with other Idaho ski resorts, especially renting a place is very expensive. Vacation rentals at Tamarack is quite cheap and there is a weekend shuttle available from Boise to the Tamarack resort and we paid only $10/person roundtrip, it took us directly to the resort. We got discount lift tickets too, you can even book your tickets online for better deals! All the Idaho ski resorts offer the best ski vacation for every visitor, but my favourite place is Tamarack. Hope you too like it!
