hi there, Here are some of the must-see cities in India: Calcutta has many historic buildings, the famous Hooghly bridge, the Victoria Memorial, the site of the infamous 'Black Hole'. Delhi, which is India's capital is a must with the Jama Masjid mosque and the famous Red Fort which sits next to the new British-built capital with its elegant buildings designed by Lutjens. Also visit the tower of Qutub Minar and Himayun's tomb, as well as Madras which is even older colony than Bombay or Calcutta, in Southern India.

I would say get yourself the India Lonely Planet or Fodor's guide as they're fantastic guide books for first timers. It has pretty much everything you need to know about travelling around India, including hostels, hotels and guest houses. As far as where to go in India, the Paharganj area in Delhi is a nice place to stay for newbies to the country as it's very popular with backpackers so there are lots of budget hotels to choose from.

I'd definitely recommend sticking to New Delhi and Mumbai for the best attractions in India. In New Delhi you must see Humayun's Tomb, Swaminarayan Akshardham, India Gate, and the Red Fort. In Mumbai, I recommend visiting Jain Temple, the Gateway of India, and Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
