| Capri and Naples are lovely places within a short ferry ride from Sorrento Italy, though I'd have to say that Sorrento is favorite spot to base because of the day trips opportunities. You can visit Pompei and Herculaneum on the train, though allow a day for each of them as the Sites are quite extensive. Btw, entrance to Pompei is 5 mins from the train at Pompei Scava, while Herculaneum is a 15min walk from Ercolano station. Also, I'd suggest getting the audio guides for the Sites rather than getting a guide, trust me, they're expensive and not worth hiring. |

| how about visiting all three? If you plan to base in Rome, you could take time for a three-day organized excursion from Rome to visit Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento and Capri. You could dine in the birthplace of pizza in Naples, tour theruins of Pompeii, enjoy a drink by the sea in Sorrento, and see Capri's famous Blue Grotto. |

| I agree with David about visiting all three, but if you do plan to do that it will depend on what time of the year you are planning to visit. During July/ August taking ferry to Capri, or Naples can be chaotic because of the huge crowds. By the way, I've been to Capri and I think you will love it there, though stay at least 5 days on Capri to really get a good chance to see it all. Mind you, the hotel prices and amenities on Capri are much pricier than on mainland Italy so budget accordingly. Quote:
