day trip to Mount Vesuvius

we're planning day trips from Naples during our 3 week vacation there, and we'd like to include a trip to Mount Vesuvius...do we need to bring a guide with us, or can we go it alone? if so, what's best way to get there?

If you were doing Mt Etna, I'd suggest to do it with an organised tour since it's worth having an experienced guide on your side. For Mt Vesuvius I wouldn't suggest doing it with a guide since it's not worth it, as they cost around $60.

Getting into Mt Vesuvius is around $10, and getting there by train is best way though I suggest booking in advance to get the 25% discount.

If you're based in Naples, you need to get the train to Pompeii Scavi and from there the bus service to Mt. Vesuvius which cost around $15, and takes about 60 minutes to get to.
