Beaches near Emilia Romagna

I'm trying to organise a beach trip for a few friends of mine. We all live in Parma, so are looking to spend around 3/4 hours on the train to get to the coast. I've been told that Rimini isn't particularly great, and that I should maybe be looking for somewhere on the west coast. Any suggestions?

Have you ever tried the Beaches in La Spezia or Ancona? They arent much further than Rimini

La Spezia - The coastline is a real attraction in summer.
