Default Suggested itineraries and camping sites

My wife and I will be on our first visit to Italy in May 2009 for +- 18 days. Because we want to really experience the country and its inhabitants (and also obviously save money!) we wwant to go the camping option. I have worked out a provisional itinerary and would appreciate comments and ideas!
- Arrive in Rome and spend 4 days (Camping Roma?)
- Train from Rome to Naples (Sleep 2 nights. See Pompeii and Capri)
- Bus from Naples to Sorrento (Sleep 2 nights)
- Overnight train from Sorrento to Venice
- Sleep 2 nights in Venice
- Train from Venice to Florence and rent car (sleep 5 nights) (Campeggio Panoramico?)
- Train frm Florence to Rome for departure back to South Africa

Now what about the areas we missed? The Dolomites, the lakes, Verona, Milan? Can this also be fitted in somehow? Please help!!! Recommended camping sites will also be appreciated!

Default Re: Suggested itineraries and camping sites

Hi there,
The month of May is definitely the best to go as it will not be as busy with tourists and the humidity is mild. Smaller towns in Italy such as Livorno, Perugia or Trepani are often more welcoming of visitors in the off-season.

As you will be using trains to get around purchase a saver pass such as the rail pass which allows you unlimited use of Italy's extensive rail network. Also, you can purchase second-class tickets instead of couchettes (private beds in shared sleeping rooms) or by taking night trains.

As you will be traveling to different regions, I would suggest car rental in Sorrento as it would offer a convenient way to travel trough.

Also, consider, climbing the tower of Pisa, sample chiantis in Siena, float down the Grand Canal, Walk the Waterfront in Naples, bicycle through Tuscany, etc.

Find more information on the main site “destination360.com/europe/italy/”

Hope this helps!
