Mexican Driver's License My Az license is suspended due to the actions of my well-loved son. I have to pay $600 to have it re-instated, which in my semi-disabled state, is a large sum to put together & it just pisses me off. I plan to live & volunteer in Latin America ca. 6 mos a year once I have secured a modest SS income. I preface my inquiry so that you understand that bona fides is not entirely absent here.
OK, my question is whether a US citizen with a bona fide residence address in Sonora (good friends), can obtain a Mexican DL in my circumstances. As a practical matter, I am assuming, thankfully, that Mexico isn't is as Orwellian as the EEUU, & I have a reasonable chance that the govt won't match me w/ my AZ license.
It's ironic; I'm well familiar, in my gratis representation of Hispanics who cannot afford counsel & are comfortable w/ a simpatico Spanish speaker, w/ the high quality docs manufactured for the large immigrant population here.
Well, what is the experience/advice of any of the forum members on this issue. I will be driving in Mexico & Central America 6 mos. of the year. Thanks, Bill
PS, for the politically inclined, AZ has an law which takes effect 01/01/08 which will, if upheld, will create a human tragedy of unimaginable proportions. In essence, all employers must verify the status of its work force w/ federal data base ("E-verify"). Knowingly employing undocumented workers after that date will result in a suspension of the business license for 10 days; a second offense = REVOCATION. There is anecdotal evidence that some employers are already "verifying" status & discharging employees, and that workers are quitting in anticipation of the law; this is a huge work force, perhaps 1 i 10 workers in the most foundational jobs.
