| Can anyone possibly tell me where the best parts of Amsterdam are to stay? I have found a relitively cheap hostel in the red light district (I will be staying with my boyfriend) and I am wondering if it is safe to stay there (especially because I am very interested in the Amsterdam club scene and we probably wont be returning to the hostel till 4 or 5 am. If this isn't a safe or great place to stay can anyone offer a suggestion abou the area that I should be looking in? Thanks so much! Steph |

| I agree, I have stayed in the red light district before, a very nice little hostel. It was safe, clean and surprisingly enough not very noisy. It was great because your in the centre of the city where everything happens! |

| I stayed in the red light area once, and was robbed by a junkie asking for my mobile and cash while pointing a knife at me. It is lively area but also clusters the city's drug addicts and dealers. Afterwards i have been back in amsterdam on a regular basis, as i love the free spirit the city emits. My prefered area by far is around leidseplein (bars, clubs and restaurants) with the main musea and vondelpark right there as well. I can recommand a stay at Hans amsterdam apartment, which has a great bohemian atmosphere |

| Moderator Jr Member | I would say most things are fairly safe, but you do want to watch out for the Red Light District. I guess you could probably find junkies anywhere. So the best area of Amsterdam to stay is close to the airport, if you're looking for safe and friendly hotels. Of course, there are some other answers for where to stay in Amsterdam. I just just a quick search on the New York Times travel page, and their top suggestions are airport hotels! |
