We now have our very first time passports (me, hubby and my 13 yo son) and are flying from London to New Zealand in April. We are not stopping over anywhere on way there and back - what the heck I thought when I booked the holiday - it was a very quick decision to book as just had a bereavement in the family. We are going for 2 weeks, staying on South Island only and hired a 4 berth motor home. We are hoping to stay in Christchurch for a few days, then make our way up the coast to Kaikoura, where my son and I shall be swimming with dolphins (Cor - really looking forward to that). Gonna stay in Blenheim for a few days to meet my penpal of well over 20 years. My question is : What are we to put in our hand luggage ? Already been suggested to take sunglasses. Hoping to take a spray for the hands and loo - 100ml no more. Have been on the site of our flight operators and got baggage weights, etc; Any ideas would be great though regarding what to put in our cabin/hand luggage. I know to keep al our paperwork, money passports with us, plus the camera. You wouldn't think Im that excited would you ? Hahahahhaaa............

Hi there, Make sure the hand luggage is approximately 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. Also, take cash, credit cards, cheques, travel insurance, mobile phone and charger, home and car keys, a camera and passports. If you need to carry essential medicines such as cough mixture and insulin in containers of more than 100ml, you will need a letter from your doctor and prior approval from the airline. Hope this helps VacationBuddy

Hello Freespirit, New Zealand is on my places to visit "wish list". I hope you have lots of fun, please come back and share your trip with us all. One thing that is always in my hand luggage is a good book or maybe you'll need two for the long distance flight you're going on! I hope you enjoy every minute of your holiday and bring back lots of photo's and memories. Spaniola

Hi Freespirit, New Zealand is a wonderful country, especially the Christchurch is an amazing place with good beaches & wineries. I did my New Zealand tour twice with my children and travelling with children is really a challenging one. Since New Zealand is a beach destination, we packed swimsuits, Sun hats, Sun creams, sandals and so many things during our first New Zealand tour, oh! it was very hard, so the next time just we bought everything in Christchurch and felt it was an easy way. Reg. hand luggage, we kept some valuables and needed items in our hand luggage including passport, travel documents, blanket, earplugs, ipod, small wash bag with toothbrush, hairbrush, handcream. etc., Also one piece of hand luggage is allowed in New Zealand flights, so try to keep your hand luggage as a lightweight one, so that it's quite easy for you to carry anywhere during your New Zealand tour. Hope this helps!

Always pack the world's greatest investion: an iPod :) Maybe some magazines, but all these reading materials always weight a ton so i never bother. A fully loaded iPod keeps you occupied for hours (games, movies, music, you name it)
