Harmon hotel Implosion?

How's this for new? One of the hotels at the City Center is slated for implosion, and it never opened.

The Harmon Hotel was a great idea, that never got off the ground, so to speak.

You never know how things are going to go in Las Vegas, especially in today's wild economic times. But it was not money exactly, but structural problems that led to the tower's demise. It was determined that it would take at least 18 months in planning, a few years of construction, and considerable expense to fix the tower and make it ready for the boutique hotel and condos.

Owner MGM Resorts plans to bring down the property by the end of the year and it will take four months to clean up afterward. The rest of the City Center project is now going strong. There are plenty of rooms still available. This is Las Vegas after all!

Sounds like plenty of building issues related to its construction. Its making big news today and I'm sure even bigger its they take it down.

I bet that will be huge news. I wonder if this is the first one that ever was imploded without ever opening. Crazy!

Definitely -- I wonder if it is the first to be imploded without opening. It's back in the news again today; I heard some updates on NPR, and it sounds like getting the OK to implode the Harmon is proving to be a huge hassle. The county wants it taken down because it's likely to collapse if there's an earthquake (all those structural flaws you guys mentioned), but there's litigation going on since MGM and the company in charge of construction are suing each other. MGM is suing Perini for shoddy construction, and Perini is suing MGM for the money they say they're still owed for the projects. Perini says the Harmon is sound and MGM is trying to destroy evidence in the case. Sounds like this one is going to take a while to resolve ... crazy!

Harmon hotel was actually designed by Norman Foster so I think this is a blow forhis credibility. I mean, who wants to stay in a hotel that is likely to collapse in an earthquake?

Also, I am also blown away that the CityCenter is seriously recommending that the hotel be demolished by implosion..are they serious? an implosion could pose health and safety problems for residents, let alone tourists to the area...

That happens when so many parties are involved in these big projects. It's hard to get them just right. I'll keep you posted when I heard more about this project. It sounds like it's a long range project.
