Retirement in Peru...

I'm thinking about visiting Lima and maybe other parts of Peru sometime next year (still in the thinking stage, no solid plans as yet). I have a friend who has offered a place to stay, so am not looking for commercial hotel info at this time. I want to check Peru out as a possible place to retire, because of its much lower cost of living than here in the US. If any retirees from the US, or anyone else who is living in Lima, are interested, I would love to hear from them, partly for information, and partly to make some new friends before I arrive there. I have Peruvian friends here in Portland who have been very encouraging and supportive about my ideas of spending at least large parts of the year there, or even moving there permanently. For living on a limited retirement income, they tell me it is a good idea, because the dollars stretch so much farther there. I want to do it in stages: first, a visit to check things out, then a longer visit of 3 months or so, and then perhaps extending that to a longer period. Any hints, suggestions or information would be most welcome and appreciated.

Hi,.I went to Miraflores for 101 days earlier this year. I plan on returning soon. I have some friends there and I really enjoy it alot. Yes, our money goes a long way,the food is good,I especially enjoy the fresh fruit.A Peruvian friend of mine and I are going start a real estate agency. We plan on catering to ' retirement age Americans' .I think most people do not realize the great atmosphere that can be ours.With the ocean,the mountains,the jungle,the climate,the food,the prices ,..there`s much to offer. Of course,there`s other matters to consider,no place is perfect. I must say,..Miraflores Will be my home.

Hi fellows, maybe you can laugh at my story. I retired in the states, and moved to Iquitos. I decided I would get bored sitting on the park bench or fishing all day, and drinking beer all night...so now three years later, I work hard as ever. My point is to know yourself. You will need to bring your hobbies with you, or develop some new ones.

I always get a kick when people say retire.. Retire from what? A person needs something to keep a mind sharp whether its a hobby, volunteering, or starting a new business. You might think about what you'd do to fill your time after the inital excitement of a new country wears off.
