If you're basing yourself in San Juan, El Morro is the top attraction there which you can't miss visiting. There is so much you can do and the views of the sea from the top are amazing. Also, it's relatively inexpensive to visit El Morro - I think it costs around $5 to get in and you can spend a great afternoon checking out the tunnels, barracks, etc.

Btw, you can also buy a combo ticket that gains you entrance in both El Morro and the nearby Fuerte San Cristobal for discounted prices.

El Morro is a top attraction in San Juan, and there is plenty to see around Old San Juan, where the forts are located. If you can, take a trip to El Yunque national forest. It is about 40 min. from San Juan. Also in the town of Fajardo there is the Bio bay, also worth doing, if you have time.

It is ABSOLUTELY worth checking out. You'll feel as though you're back in time and protecting the fort from incoming pirates and other invaders (this is the story). You can see it on your own, so no tours are required. There are plenty of plaques to illustrate the different areas.

Aside from El Morro, within the same location we're talking about Old San Juan. Walk around, there are plenty of restaurants and boutique shops, etc. This is the oldest city in the U.S. so enjoy it!
