what's Russia like nowadays?

Anyone been to Russia? Moscow or St. Petersburg? I'm thinking of taking a trip. Any advice on what to do when first arriving?

Also, what should I expect and how much Russian is actually needed to get by?

Any advice is appreciated.

Not sure about today but I went to Moscow Russia 2 years ago with a vacation package that included tours.

There are American-style hotels in Moscow but weren't that expensive - about $200 per night for a nice, standard room, but that was 2 years ago.

People spoke English, though not everyone will, but enough people so you can get by.

Regarding places, you must arrange a guided tour of the Kremlin which cost about $50 per person for a tour that lasted at least four hours.

Overall, Russian people dealing with the tourists will speak enough English to get by. We did learn a little Russian before we went - enough to say please and thank you, hello, etc.

Don't forget about a Russian visa:)
