day trip to Cuenca

is it realistic to take a day trip from Madrid to Cuenca? Not sure how much we'd be able to see once there..should we use car rental, train..any thoughts?

I'd say that it is realistic to get there and explore the city in one day, but you'll need to leave very early in the morning to get the most out of your trip.

Driving in Spain is a blast and normally bus and car rental are best, but since you only have a day in Cuenca, train will be the best mode of transport in this instance. You can get a direct train to Cuenca from Atocha Train Station which takes around 3 hours. The train fare will cost around 15 Euros which is't so expensive, though Cuenca is not the last stop, and each train stops at a different number of stations before reaching Cuenca
